Meet your chiropractor

Why I became a chiropractor

I started working in a chiropractic office as a teenager and saw the positive impact chiropractic had on a wide variety of people, all by using the body’s own innate ability to heal. Also, everyone was so happy to be there! I thought that was the coolest way to help people, and knew I was going to be a chiropractor ever since.

What makes me different

I analyze the x-rays with line-drawing to know exactly what the postural changes are, and what directional force each segment needs to be adjusted with. I recheck joint motion and/or muscle tone after the adjustment to be sure I made a positive change in your body on that day.

What an adjustment feels like

I’ll be using my hands to press into this joint that is stuck, to get it to move. If there is air in between the joints it will make a popping sound. It doesn’t hurt, most people say it feels good. It doesn’t take very long, only a few minutes

Outside the office

I grew up in Sheboygan county, met my chiropractor husband in school down in Georgia, and had an international adventure in Singapore for a few years before coming back to Wisconsin. I’m raising our kids as Packer fans, but my husband is trying to get his Bears influence in there.

Focus areas

Where I focus

Every doctor at Chiropractic Company is trained to care for the full range of spinal and musculoskeletal conditions. What differs between us is the additional training we’ve done and the patients we’ve spent the most time with.

Desk & office workers

Desk workers and students with stress headaches, body stiffness, and poor posture

Pregnancy

Pregnant women looking for a more comfortable, less painful pregnancy and birth experience. Promoting optimal pelvic function through every stage of pregnancy up until birth.

Healthcare workers

Nurses and CNAs who are on their feet for long shifts and have physically demanding jobs

Technique

How I work

Shorewood is most often adults who do computer work with stress headaches, jaw tension, upper back/neck pain related to posture and screen time. We are close to UW-Milwaukee and see a lot of those students. Pregnant women are my favorite type of patient

Usually first

Diversified

I want to get the joint moving to make the most impact

Then

Activator / instrument

in more sensitive areas I like to use less force at first until the patient is more comfortable

Also

Drop table

Easier on my body and laying on side takes more trust from patient initially

Low force

Thompson drop-table

A section of the table drops a short distance as the adjustment is delivered, so less manual force is needed to move the joint.

Beyond the spine

Extremity adjusting

Adjusting joints outside the spine — shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles and feet. Often what a spine-only approach misses.

Children

Pediatric / low-force

Adjusting scaled to a child, using roughly the pressure you would use to check a ripe tomato. Nothing like an adult adjustment in force or technique.

Assessment

Motion palpation

Feeling how each joint moves through its range rather than assessing it at rest. This is how a restricted segment gets found — often not where the pain is.

Assessment

X-ray analysis

On-site imaging when it will change the plan. Used to rule things out as much as to confirm them.

Assessment

Gait analysis

Watching how you walk. Foot, knee, hip and back complaints frequently trace back to something happening at heel strike.

Assessment

Digital foot scan

A pressure scan of both feet, showing how weight distributes and where the arch is collapsing.

Also uses Trigger point therapy, Electrical stimulation, Corrective exercise, PNF stretching and Custom orthotics.

Two things worth knowing

You decide what I do

I say, if there are no restrictions in your neck there will be no need to touch it. If there are, are you okay with an instrument that will not involve any twisting or popping sounds?

When I’ll send you somewhere else

Rotator cuff problems I will usually send to PT to gain more stability, rather than trying to put more motion with adjustments. Any radicular pain that isn’t seeing a positive change within 3-4 weeks I will send to spine specialist for second opinion and advanced imaging.

For most people, no. You may hear or feel a pop, which is gas releasing from the joint rather than bones cracking. Some people feel mild soreness afterward, similar to after a workout, usually for a day or less.

Plan for about an hour. That covers the consultation, the exam, and X-rays if they’re needed. At your second visit, Dr. Kiela goes over the results and your care plan. Follow-up visits are shorter.
