Chiropractor for Kids and Teens in Milwaukee

Sore back from a heavy backpack, or an ache after practice? Let’s look for what’s behind it.

Trusted, personal care in neighborhood clinics throughout Greater Milwaukee.

Why kids get sore

Why sports, backpacks, and screens wear on growing bodies

Sports injuries are common in young people. From 2010 to 2016, there were about 2.7 million emergency visits each year for sports injuries among ages 5 to 24.2

About two-thirds of those visits (66.5%) were for kids ages 10 to 19. Sprains, strains, and dislocations were the most common type, at 28.1%.2

Backpacks matter too. The American Academy of Pediatrics says a backpack shouldn’t weigh more than 15% of your child’s body weight.1 Backpacks haven’t been shown to cause scoliosis, but good habits can ease back strain.1

How we help

How chiropractic care helps kids and teens

Your child’s doctor listens to you both, checks how they move, and talks through care that fits their age, sport, and schedule.

Good to know

If you don’t want an adjustment

Say so, and your doctor won’t adjust your child. Gentle joint movement, muscle work, and exercise are other options. You choose your child’s care.

Parents

A parent or guardian at every visit

You’re in the room, you hear what the doctor finds, and you give consent before any care.

Focus

Muscles and joints only

We look at sports aches, backpack strain, and posture. Other health concerns belong with your pediatrician.

Gentle option

Gentle joint and muscle work

Light pressure and slow movements ease tight, sore muscles after practice or a long school day.

Backpack and sports tips

Simple habits for backpacks and sports

A few easy habits help kids carry their load and stay in the game.

Backpacks

  • Keep the pack at 15% of body weight or less. For a 100-pound child, that’s 15 pounds.1
  • Use both shoulder straps, not one.1
  • Pack heavy books closest to the back, and balance the load side to side.1
  • Buckle the waist or chest strap to keep the pack close to the body.1
  • Bend at the knees to lift the pack.1

Staying active

  • Aim for 60 minutes or more of activity each day for ages 6 to 17.3
  • Include muscle- and bone-building play, like climbing and jumping, at least 3 days a week.3
  • Take screen breaks to stand up, stretch, and look up from the phone.

When to call the pediatrician

Don’t ignore back pain in a child or teen that happens when they aren’t wearing a backpack. Ask your pediatrician for advice.1

Hurt at practice?

If there’s a lot of swelling, your child can’t put weight on it, or the pain is severe, see their pediatrician or urgent care first.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

  1. Share your story

Your doctor asks what brings you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your daily activities, and your goals.

  2. Get a thorough exam

Your doctor checks how your spine and joints move, where it’s tender, and your strength, reflexes, and sensation. X-rays are taken if needed.

  3. Talk through your options

Your doctor explains what they found and walks you through care options. You decide what's right for you.

  4. Begin care at your next visit

Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

A parent or guardian is with your child for the whole visit. You'll see the same doctor as your care continues, so the person treating you knows your history and your progress.
