How it works

Talking about nutrition with your doctor

Nutritional counseling happens in the clinic, as part of your visit. If your doctor recommends a supplement, you order it online. There’s no pressure to buy.

  1. Bring your list

Tell your doctor every supplement, vitamin, and medication you take now, including over-the-counter ones.3

  2. Talk about your goals

Share what you eat, how you feel, and what you’d like to work toward. Your doctor listens first.

  3. Decide together

Your doctor can talk with you about whether a supplement fits your goals. Sometimes the answer is no. You decide.

  4. Check with your medical doctor

Before starting something new, check with your medical doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take medications.2,3

Before you take a supplement

What to know before you start

Supplements are products like any other, and they can affect your body and your medicines. A few facts from federal health agencies:

Not FDA-approved before sale

Medicines must be approved by the FDA before they’re sold. Supplements don’t need this approval.2,3

Some mix badly with medications

Some supplements can change how medicines work. For example, vitamin K can weaken the blood thinner warfarin.3

More isn’t always better

Taking more than you need costs more and might raise your risk of side effects.3

Tell your doctor and check with your medical doctor if you:

  • Take any prescription or over-the-counter medications.3
  • Have surgery or a procedure coming up.3
  • Are pregnant or nursing.3
  • Are thinking about a supplement for a child.3
  • Notice any side effect after starting something new.2

Our role

Your chiropractor can talk about nutrition, but doesn’t replace your medical doctor or pharmacist. Please keep them in the loop about everything you take.
