Sports Chiropractor in Milwaukee for Athletes and Active Adults

Pain or an injury getting in the way of your training? Let’s look for what’s behind it.

Trusted, personal care in neighborhood clinics throughout Greater Milwaukee.

Why athletes get hurt

Why sports and training wear on your body

Sports injuries are common. From 2011 to 2014, Americans reported about 8.6 million sports and recreation injuries each year.1

The legs took the biggest share. About 42% of those injuries were to the lower body, and 30% were to the arms and shoulders.1

Runners get hurt often too. In a 2021 review, about 4 in 10 runners developed a running injury during the studies.2 The knee, ankle, and lower leg were the most common spots.2

Most of these aren’t freak accidents. They build from training habits, gear, and how your body moves.

Doing too much, too soon

Poor training habits, like ramping up too fast, are a common cause of injury.3

Skipping the warm-up

Not warming up or stretching enough can lead to injuries.3

Worn-out or poor-fitting gear

The wrong gear, including worn-out shoes, adds strain.3

How we help

How chiropractic care helps active people

Your doctor listens, checks how your joints and muscles move, and builds a plan around your sport, schedule, and goals.

Good to know

If you don’t want an adjustment

Say so, and your doctor won’t adjust you. Gentle joint movement, muscle work, and exercise are other options. You choose your care.

Hands-on

Spinal and joint adjustments

Targeted adjustments help stiff joints in your back, hips, and other joints move more freely.

Gentle option

Gentle joint and muscle work

Slow movements and pressure ease tight muscles after hard training days.

Movement check

A look at how you move

Your doctor watches how you squat, reach, run, or swing, and looks for what’s adding strain.

Rehab

Strength and mobility exercises

Exercises you can fold into warm-ups and training to support the area that hurts.

Teamwork

Working with your coaches and trainers

With your OK, your doctor can share your plan with your coach, athletic trainer, or other providers.

Is it safe?

Some people feel sore or stiff, or get a mild headache, after an adjustment. These usually go away within a day. Serious problems are very rare.4

Training tips

Simple habits that help you stay in the game

Most sports injuries build slowly. Small changes to how you train can ease the strain.

  • Warm up before every run, lift, round, or game.3
  • Build mileage, weight, or playing time gradually, not all at once.3
  • Use gear that fits your body and your sport, and replace worn-out shoes.3
  • Do muscle-strengthening work at least 2 days a week.5
  • If you get hurt, stop. Playing through an injury can cause more harm.3
  • Mix in rest days so your body has time to recover.

Right after a minor injury

Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) are a common first step for sprains and strains.3 If pain lingers past a few days, get it checked.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

  1. Share your story

Your doctor asks what brings you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your daily activities, and your goals.

  2. Get a thorough exam

Your doctor checks how your spine and joints move, where it’s tender, and your strength, reflexes, and sensation. X-rays are taken if needed.

  3. Talk through your options

Your doctor explains what they found and walks you through care options. You decide what's right for you.

  4. Begin care at your next visit

Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

You'll see the same doctor as your care continues, so the person treating you knows your history and your progress.

Questions from athletes

A chiropractor who works with active people looks at how your joints and muscles move during your sport. Your doctor checks the area that hurts, then talks through hands-on care, exercises, and training changes. You choose your care.

Often, yes, with some changes. Your doctor talks through what to scale back, what to keep, and how to build back up. The goal is to keep you moving while the sore area recovers.
