Why pregnancy strains your back

Why pregnancy strains your back and hips

Back pain is one of the most common pregnancy problems, especially in the later months.2

A 2015 research review found that more than two in three pregnant women have lower back pain. Almost one in five have pelvic pain.1

As your uterus grows, your center of gravity shifts and your belly muscles stretch. That changes your posture and adds strain to your back. Extra weight also means more work for your muscles and joints.2

How we help

How chiropractic care helps during pregnancy

Your doctor listens, checks how your back, hips, and pelvis move, and talks through gentle care that fits each stage of pregnancy.

Good to know

If you don’t want an adjustment

Say so, and your doctor won’t adjust you. Gentle joint movement, muscle work, and exercise are other options. You choose your care.

Teamwork

We work alongside your OB or midwife

Talk with your OB or midwife before you start. We’ll ask about your pregnancy and share what we find if you’d like.

Comfort

Gentle positioning

Your doctor uses pillows and side-lying positions so you don’t lie flat on your belly.

Hands-on

Gentle spinal adjustments

When appropriate, careful adjustments help stiff joints in your back and pelvis move more freely.

Gentle option

Gentle joint and muscle work

Slow movements and light pressure ease tight muscles in your back, hips, and buttocks.

Rehab

Pregnancy-friendly exercises

Simple stretches and strength moves you can do at home, cleared with your OB or midwife.

Every day

Tips for sleep, work, and lifting

Practical changes for sleeping, sitting, standing, and lifting as your body changes.

What the research says

A 2015 research review found that exercise may ease back pain in pregnancy, though the evidence was low quality.1 Evidence on hands-on care came from only a few studies. We’ll be honest about what care can and can’t do.

Everyday tips

Small changes that ease the strain

Simple habits can make your days and nights more comfortable.

  • Wear low-heeled (not flat) shoes with good arch support.2
  • Sit in chairs with good back support, or tuck a small pillow behind your lower back.2
  • If you stand for a long time, rest one foot on a stool or box.2
  • To lift, squat down, bend your knees, and keep your back straight. Don’t bend at the waist.2
  • Later in pregnancy, sleep on your side with one or both knees bent. A pillow between your knees can help.2
  • Walking and water exercise are often easy on your back. Check with your OB or midwife first.2

Using heat?

Set a heating pad to its lowest setting and wrap it in a towel. Cold packs can help too.2

Working at a desk?

Get up and move often. A small pillow behind your lower back and a footrest can make sitting easier.

When to call your OB

Some pain needs your OB or midwife right away

Chiropractic care isn’t the right first step for every ache. Know the signs that need your OB or midwife.

Call your OB or midwife about back pain if:

  • Your back pain is severe, or it lasts more than two weeks.2
  • You also have a fever.2
  • You feel burning when you urinate.2
  • You have vaginal bleeding.2

Back pain can be a sign of preterm labor or a urinary tract infection.2

Get medical care right away for urgent warning signs

These include a severe headache that won’t go away, vision changes, a fever of 100.4°F or higher, and trouble breathing or chest pain.3 Also get care right away for severe belly pain, your baby moving less, vaginal bleeding or leaking fluid, or swelling or pain in one leg.3 Call 911 in an emergency.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

  1. Share your story

Your doctor asks what brings you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your daily activities, and your goals.

  2. Get a thorough exam

Your doctor checks how your spine and joints move, where it’s tender, and your strength, reflexes, and sensation. X-rays are taken if needed.

  3. Talk through your options

Your doctor explains what they found and walks you through care options. You decide what's right for you.

  4. Begin care at your next visit

Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

You'll see the same doctor as your care continues, so the person treating you knows your history and your progress.
