Why staying active matters

Why staying strong and steady matters after 65

Falls are common as we age. More than one in four adults 65 and older fall each year, and fewer than half tell their doctor.3

Falls hit Wisconsin especially hard. In 2023, Wisconsin had the highest rate of fall deaths among adults 65 and older in the country.2 The rate was 158.4 per 100,000 people, more than twice the national rate of 69.9.2

Pain can make you move less, and moving less can cost you strength and balance. Our goal is to help you move more comfortably, so you can keep up the activity that keeps you steady.

Strength and balance

CDC recommends activities that build leg strength and balance, such as tai chi.4

Moving most days

Aim for about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, as your health allows.5

How we help

How chiropractic care helps older adults

Your doctor listens, checks how your back, neck, and joints move, and talks through care that fits your health and your goals.

Good to know

If you don’t want an adjustment

Say so, and your doctor won’t adjust you. Gentle joint movement, muscle work, and exercise are other options. You choose your care.

Your health

Care that fits your health history

Your doctor asks about your bone health, past surgeries, and medicines. Then they adjust care to fit, and may choose gentler options.

Hands-on

Spinal adjustments

Careful, targeted adjustments help stiff joints in your back and neck move more freely.

Gentle option

Gentle joint and muscle work

Slow, controlled movements and light pressure ease stiff joints and tight muscles.

Balance

Strength and balance exercises

Simple moves for your legs and core that you can do at home, at your own pace.

Balance and activity tips

Simple ways to stay steady and active

Small habits help you stay on your feet and doing the things you enjoy.

  • Ask your primary doctor to check your risk of falling.4
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines that may make you dizzy or sleepy.4
  • Do exercises that strengthen your legs and improve your balance. Tai chi is a good example.4
  • Try balance moves like walking heel to toe, or standing up from a chair.5
  • Have your eyes checked at least once a year.4
  • Clear tripping hazards, add grab bars and stair railings, and keep your home well lit.4

Some activity beats none

If 150 minutes a week sounds like a lot, start small. CDC says to be as active as your abilities and conditions allow.5

Fallen before?

Falling once doubles your chances of falling again.3 Tell your primary doctor, even if you weren’t hurt.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

  1. Share your story

Your doctor asks what brings you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your daily activities, and your goals.

  2. Get a thorough exam

Your doctor checks how your spine and joints move, where it’s tender, and your strength, reflexes, and sensation. X-rays are taken if needed.

  3. Talk through your options

Your doctor explains what they found and walks you through care options. You decide what's right for you.

  4. Begin care at your next visit

Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

You'll see the same doctor as your care continues, so the person treating you knows your history and your progress.

Common questions

Questions from older adults

Partly. Medicare Part B covers spinal adjustments by a chiropractor to correct a subluxation. That’s when spinal joints don’t move properly but are still in contact. After the Part B deductible, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Verify your insurance and our team will explain your costs.

No. Medicare doesn’t cover other services or tests a chiropractor orders, including X-rays and massage. Your doctor explains what’s recommended and why, and our team tells you the cost before your visit. You choose your care.

Your doctor starts with your health history, including bone health, past surgeries, and medicines. Then they adjust care to fit you and may choose gentler options. If you’d rather not be adjusted, gentle joint movement, muscle work, and exercise are other choices.

Tell your chiropractor about your bone health at your first visit. They adjust your care for it and may choose gentler, low-force options or skip adjustments in some areas. Keep talking with your primary doctor about your bones, too.

We can’t promise fewer falls. Your doctor can check how your joints move and teach strength and balance exercises you can do at home. Also ask your primary doctor to check your risk of falling.

Often, yes. Same-day appointments are available at many of our clinics, depending on the day and each clinic’s hours. Call your nearest clinic or request an appointment online to check today’s openings. Your first visit is for your consultation and exam, and treatment typically begins at your next visit.

Usually not. Your first visit is for listening, a full exam, and X-rays if needed. Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

No referral is needed. Some insurance plans may require one for full benefits. Our team checks your plan when you verify your insurance and lets you know before your visit.
