Why students get sore

Why college life wears on your neck and back

Neck pain is very common in college. A 2023 research review notes that studies have found neck pain in 48% to 78% of college students.1

The same review pooled 30 studies with 18,395 students. Strong risk factors included a poor pillow, too little exercise, poor sitting posture, and staying up late.1

Long hours on devices and looking down for long stretches also raised the odds. So did stress and emotional strain.1

Laptops and phones

Looking down at screens for hours pulls your head forward.1

Dorm beds and pillows

A pillow that doesn’t support your neck was one of the strongest risk factors.1

Late nights and stress

Staying up late and high stress were both linked to neck pain.1

Study setup tips

A study setup that’s easier on your neck

Small changes to how you study and sleep can ease the strain on your neck and back.

  • Raise your laptop so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level.2
  • Keep the screen 20 to 40 inches from your eyes.2
  • Use a separate keyboard and mouse when your laptop is raised.
  • Study at a desk or table, not hunched over on your bed.
  • Get up, roll your shoulders, and look away from the screen about every 30 minutes.
  • Aim for 7 or more hours of sleep a night.3

Dorm bed check

A thin or worn-out pillow can leave your neck unsupported. Pick one that keeps your head level with your spine when you lie on your side.

On a budget?

A stack of textbooks makes a fine laptop stand. Add a basic keyboard and mouse.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

  1. Share your story

Your doctor asks what brings you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your daily activities, and your goals.

  2. Get a thorough exam

Your doctor checks how your spine and joints move, where it’s tender, and your strength, reflexes, and sensation. X-rays are taken if needed.

  3. Talk through your options

Your doctor explains what they found and walks you through care options. You decide what's right for you.

  4. Begin care at your next visit

Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

You'll see the same doctor as your care continues, so the person treating you knows your history and your progress.
