Chiropractor for Nurses and Health Care Workers in Milwaukee

You take care of everyone else. Back, neck, or feet sore after your shift? Let’s look for what’s behind it.

Trusted, personal care in neighborhood clinics throughout Greater Milwaukee.

Why care work hurts

Why caring for patients wears on your body

Health care workers have muscle and joint injuries at a higher rate than workers in construction, mining, or manufacturing.2

In 2017, nursing assistants had 166.3 injuries with time off work per 10,000 workers. That’s more than five times the average for all industries.1

In 2018, muscle, joint, and back injuries made up 52% of nursing assistants’ injuries with time off work.3

Strains and sprains are the most common injuries. The shoulders and lower back are hit hardest.1

Moving and repositioning patients

Transfers, repositioning in bed, and lifting are the highest-risk tasks.1

More than your body can safely lift

NIOSH recommends no caregiver manually lift more than 35 pounds of a person’s weight.2

Long shifts on your feet

Hours of standing and walking on hard floors add up in your feet, knees, and back.

How we help

How chiropractic care helps health care workers

Your doctor listens, checks how your back, neck, shoulders, and feet move, and talks through care that fits your shifts.

Good to know

If you don’t want an adjustment

Say so, and your doctor won’t adjust you. Gentle joint movement, muscle work, and exercise are other options. You choose your care.

Hands-on

Spinal adjustments

Targeted adjustments help stiff joints in your back and neck move more freely.

Gentle option

Gentle joint and muscle work

Slow movements and pressure ease tight muscles in your back, neck, and shoulders.

Rehab

Strength and mobility exercises

Simple exercises that support your back and shoulders for patient care.

Tips for your shift

Habits that are easier on your body

Safe patient handling programs, good shoes, and real recovery time can ease the strain of care work.

  • Use your unit’s lift and transfer equipment, even when you’re short on time.1
  • Get help for heavy or awkward transfers instead of lifting a patient alone.2
  • Raise the bed to a good working height before you reposition a patient.
  • Keep the patient close to your body and turn with your feet, not your back.
  • Wear supportive, cushioned, slip-resistant shoes that fit well.
  • After a long shift, take a short walk and stretch before you sit or sleep.
  • Protect your sleep between shifts. Tired muscles need rest to recover.

Lift programs work

In a nursing home study from 1995 to 2000, lift equipment, training, and safe lifting policies cut patient-handling injuries by 61%.2

Speak up about equipment

Missing slings or a broken lift is a safety issue. Tell your supervisor or safety team.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first visit

  1. Share your story

Your doctor asks what brings you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your daily activities, and your goals.

  2. Get a thorough exam

Your doctor checks how your spine and joints move, where it’s tender, and your strength, reflexes, and sensation. X-rays are taken if needed.

  3. Talk through your options

Your doctor explains what they found and walks you through care options. You decide what's right for you.

  4. Begin care at your next visit

Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

You'll see the same doctor as your care continues, so the person treating you knows your history and your progress.

Common questions

Questions from health care workers

Many nurses find chiropractic care helps them move more comfortably. Your doctor checks how your back, neck, and shoulders move and asks about your shifts. Then you talk through hands-on care and exercises. You choose your care.

Look for shoes that fit well, cushion your feet, support your arch, and resist slipping. Replace them when the cushioning wears down. If your feet still hurt, ask about a free foot scan at any clinic.

Walk and stretch gently after your shift, then protect your sleep. Drink water and eat regular meals during your shift. If pain lingers into your days off, have it checked.

Report it to your supervisor right away. In Wisconsin, injured workers can choose a licensed chiropractor for treatment. See our guide for injured workers and workers’ comp page.

Often, yes. Same-day appointments are available at many of our clinics, depending on the day and each clinic’s hours. Call your nearest clinic or request an appointment online to check today’s openings. Your first visit is for your consultation and exam, and treatment typically begins at your next visit.

Usually not. Your first visit is for listening, a full exam, and X-rays if needed. Treatment begins at visit two. In acute cases, your doctor may decide same-day treatment is appropriate.

No referral is needed. Some insurance plans may require one for full benefits. Our team checks your plan when you verify your insurance and lets you know before your visit.

Eligible new patients can request a first visit for $29, including a consultation, an exam, and X-rays if needed. The offer requires requesting an appointment online and a visit within five business days. Medicare and Medicaid patients aren’t eligible.
