An injury I could not train through

I grew up as an overly exuberant athlete here in town. Unfortunately, I was the second smallest kid in my grade up to Junior year. When I was playing football, I was told by my coaches to hit the tackling sled and push it across the field. I was so small that I had to throw my entire body into it just to make it rock.

Doing this over and over eventually dislocated my shoulder, so growing up with chiropractic care, that is where I went to get it reset. Over and over again I made trips to see my chiropractor and as a result I got a good working relationship with him. As I was deciding what I wanted to do with my life, I recognized that my athletic talents were not going to get me into the pros, however I wanted to continue to help with athletes and injuries. Chiropractic allowed me to not only be able to treat professional athletes but after working in the north shore, which is mostly families, I developed a loving taste for helping all people in my community.

What makes me different

After 20 plus years of treating my hometown, I appreciate the roll I get to play in helping every patient live better lives. Whether it is an athlete getting better or helping people with a new family, I love being able to put more life into people.

What an adjustment feels like

Chiropractic care is a physical type of care, where we remove blockages to the body functioning better. Each adjustment is different depending on the needs of the patient, but it is a lot like reverse Jenga. If you think of a Jenga tower that has many blocks pushed around, the tower isn’t very stable. If we can get the blocks back to where they were supposed to go, the tower gets to do what it was meant to do. If we can put the blocks of your body back together then you also get to do what you were meant to do, be healthy.

Outside the office

I grew up here in Milwaukee, playing many sports, football, soccer, volleyball to tennis. I was always outside competing which has continued on now with you being able to find me out playing golf and racquet sports. I have been an avid supporter of all my kid’s activities as they have grown up, be it theater or sports and the commutes that come along with them.

Focus areas

Where I focus

Every doctor at Chiropractic Company is trained to care for the full range of spinal and musculoskeletal conditions. What differs between us is the additional training we’ve done and the patients we’ve spent the most time with.

Families

For over 20 years the families of the North Shore have trusted me to help them through everything from daily bumps and bruises to highly complicated injuries.

Athletes

Having advanced certifications in several types of sports injury management has allowed me to help treat professional athletes nationally as well as youth and recreational level her in Milwaukee.

Healthcare workers

One of the largest groups of patients treated are healthcare workers. The stressful environment in which they work causes frequent injuries for which they are tremendously grateful to get relief from.

Technique

How I work

As a suburb of Milwaukee, Glendale is composed of families which provide us the opportunity to take care of many issues from child injuries, job requirement pain, to elderly issues and everything in between.

Adjusting

Diversified

The most widely used chiropractic technique — a specific, hands-on thrust to restore motion in a restricted joint. This is what most people picture when they think of getting adjusted.

Structural

Gonstead

A detailed analytical approach that identifies one specific segment rather than adjusting a region. Usually paired with x-ray and palpation findings.

Low force

Thompson drop-table

A section of the table drops a short distance as the adjustment is delivered, so less manual force is needed to move the joint.

Low force

Activator / instrument

A small handheld instrument delivers a controlled, low-force impulse to a specific spot. No twisting, no popping sound.

Beyond the spine

Extremity adjusting

Adjusting joints outside the spine — shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles and feet. Often what a spine-only approach misses.

Children

Pediatric / low-force

Adjusting scaled to a child, using roughly the pressure you would use to check a ripe tomato. Nothing like an adult adjustment in force or technique.

Assessment

X-ray analysis

On-site imaging when it will change the plan. Used to rule things out as much as to confirm them.

Assessment

Movement screening

Watching how you move through a set of positions to find the limitation driving the complaint.

Assessment

Digital foot scan

A pressure scan of both feet, showing how weight distributes and where the arch is collapsing.

Soft tissue

Active Release Technique

Pressure held on a muscle while it is taken through its range, to free adhesions that have built up between tissue layers.

Also uses Myofascial release, Trigger point therapy, Kinesiology taping, Spinal decompression and Cold laser.

Two things worth knowing

You decide what I do

Everyone’s care is individualized to their needs. If we can work around the concern, then we are happy to do so.

When I’ll send you somewhere else

There are many conditions that chiropractic is excellent in helping with, however there is a time and a place for all types of care. If I feel like a patient will benefit from acupuncture, massage, PT or an orthopedic evaluation it doesn’t do either of us any good to wait. Many times, multiple disciplines are needed to get a patient to function at their full potential.

For most people, no. You may hear or feel a pop, which is gas releasing from the joint rather than bones cracking. Some people feel mild soreness afterward, similar to after a workout, usually for a day or less.

Plan for about an hour. That covers the consultation, the exam, and X-rays if they’re needed. At your second visit, Dr. Scoyk goes over the results and your care plan. Follow-up visits are shorter.
