Why I became a chiropractor

I sustained a back injury during my years as a competitive equestrian athlete.

Chiropractic care helped me get back in the saddle and allowed me to keep riding - despite many other thrills and spills. I had tried other treatments but appreciated the way they evaluated the mechanics of how my body needed to work and I now approach chiropractic in this way - what parts aren’t working and how do we make them work better?

What makes me different

I use a mixture of manual and low force techniques, myofascial work and provide patients with home exercise plans to make sure we don’t just address where they feel pain, but why they feel it in the first place.

What an adjustment feels like

An adjustment is a force specifically applied to a joint to correct its motion, whether it’s not moving with full range of motion or not moving in a balanced way. Sometimes it "pops", but even if it doesn’t, your body still absorbs the neurological information the adjustment provides.

Outside the office

My husband and I are avid travelers and animal lovers. In my free time you’ll find me hanging out with my retired horse, two cats and dog while reading, hiking, kayaking or planning our next adventure.

Focus areas

Where I focus

Every doctor at Chiropractic Company is trained to care for the full range of spinal and musculoskeletal conditions. What differs between us is the additional training we’ve done and the patients we’ve spent the most time with.

Active adults

Gym injuries, pain or poor exercise recovery in all levels of exercise - just starting out or professional athletes

Outdoor enthusiasts

Hiking around beautiful Wisconsin?

Hiking around beautiful Wisconsin? Let’s make sure you can put in the miles without lower extremity pain

Healthcare workers

Healthcare workers- poor ergonomics can lead to chronic pain and headaches. It’s hard to provide the best care when you don’t feel 100%

Technique

How I work

Third Ward is mostly active adults and young professionals who want to feel their best for longevity in their mobility, exercise activities and careers.

Usually first

Diversified

it lets me feel what isn’t working and to specifically restore proper motion

Then

Corrective exercise

for lasting results, the supporting system of your body must be addressed

Also

Home exercise plans

I want you to have the tools to manage your condition long term, with my help when you need it

Low force

Thompson drop-table

A section of the table drops a short distance as the adjustment is delivered, so less manual force is needed to move the joint.

Low force

Activator / instrument

A small handheld instrument delivers a controlled, low-force impulse to a specific spot. No twisting, no popping sound.

Low force

SOT / blocking

Padded wedges placed under the pelvis let body weight do the correcting over several minutes. Very little force applied directly.

Beyond the spine

Extremity adjusting

Adjusting joints outside the spine — shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles and feet. Often what a spine-only approach misses.

Assessment

Motion palpation

Feeling how each joint moves through its range rather than assessing it at rest. This is how a restricted segment gets found — often not where the pain is.

Assessment

X-ray analysis

On-site imaging when it will change the plan. Used to rule things out as much as to confirm them.

Soft tissue

Active Release Technique

Pressure held on a muscle while it is taken through its range, to free adhesions that have built up between tissue layers.

Also uses Myofascial release, Trigger point therapy, Kinesiology taping, Electrical stimulation and Ergonomic assessment.

Two things worth knowing

You decide what I do

I address their concerns about it and let them know I will only proceed with treatments they are comfortable with. If they have a neck problem but don’t want an adjustment, we can talk about alternative treatments and techniques that can still help.

When I’ll send you somewhere else

If the exam leads me to believe that the pain is not coming from joint, nerve or muscle, I will refer the patient to their primary care to manage advanced testing and appropriate referrals.

For most people, no. You may hear or feel a pop, which is gas releasing from the joint rather than bones cracking. Some people feel mild soreness afterward, similar to after a workout, usually for a day or less.

Plan for about an hour. That covers the consultation, the exam, and X-rays if they’re needed. At your second visit, Dr. Merriman goes over the results and your care plan. Follow-up visits are shorter.
